Bender earns spot in Paris

NORWICH, Vt. (WCAX) -Three native Vermonters have punched their tickets to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and it’ll be a return trip for Burlington’s Ilona Maher of the USA Women’s Rugby 7′s side and Elle St. Pierre of Montgomery Center on the track. But Norwich native Bill Bender will be making his first Olympic appearance.“We had speed order in the pair, and then we had selection camp, which was in big boats, and then we had Olympic trials,” Bender said. “So just winning trials, the first feeling was kind of like, ‘I made it, I can breathe now.’”Bender is heading to Paris to compete in rowing, specifically the men’s pair.“I think the pair is especially difficult because we each have one oar,” Bender said. “So I have pretty much complete control over what happens on the port side, and he has complete control over what happens on the starboard side. If we’re not exactly perfectly matched up, the boat’s not gonna go straight. If it doesn’t go straight, then it’s not going fast.” A Hanover High School grad, Bender says the laid back culture of that team helped get him excited about the sport and motivated to get better. “It’s a good group of guys,” he said. “Hanover High School is a great program. I mean, it’s a tough balance. It’s a conversation that we have semi-frequently. How do we balance getting people to be really good at the sport or any sport without like crushing their will to live basically.” Bender took this year off from the Dartmouth team to pursue his Olympic dream. “It’s a really kind of talented driven group of guys,” he said of the Big Green program. “It’s a really great coaching staff, world class facilities. And then the Connecticut’s just a great body to row on. So, you know, it’s been a really the happy place for me. And I think obviously athletically I’ve made a lot of strides in the last three years.” Bender says he and his pairs partner, Dartmouth alumnus Oliver Bub, have an uphill battle competing against the best in the world over in France. But they’ve got big goals too. “Pretty much all smaller countries will put their top guys in smaller boats, and a lot of times that ends up being the pair,” he said. “It’s a really competitive event. If we have a really excellent regatta, and maybe we also get lucky and some crews have not as great of a regatta, it’s not inconceivable that we could medal.” Bender and Bub are training in Princeton, New Jersey now. Men’s pair competition starts in Paris on July 28th.
Gravel takes late models, Caron wins first round of Myers Triple Crown

BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) - After seeing last week’s Governor’s Cup night postponed, the Thursday action at Thunder Road resumed this week with the first leg of the Myers Containers Service Triple Crown Series for the Flying Tigers.The Late Models race was fairly uneventful for the first 25 laps, as a group of four led by Chris Roberts and Phil Scott paced the way. Marcel Gravel was just behind the two, and was able to take the lead on lap 30, overtaking Roberts. Gravel would hang on to his lead after a restart, and stay in front throughout the final 12 laps to earn his first win of the season.The Myers Triple Crown race was controlled most of the way by Sam Caron. Neck and neck with Brandon Gray initially, Caron took the lead 17 laps in, and never looked back. The Colchester native earned his second win of the season, and is the current points leader in the division.The 25-lap Street Stocks race saw Josh Lovely earn his first win of the season, running away from the field at first. A caution brought everyone back together about halfway through, but only for a moment, as Lovely sprinted away with just two laps to go following one final yellow flag.
