The performance evaluation of a thermo-syphon water heating system using a compound parabolic solar collector is presented. The system investigated consists of a compound parabolic collector, an absorber/receiver, a hot water storage tank, a cold water storage tank, water returning pipe and the support stand. Cold water is stored in an upper bigger cold water tank and this water flows by gravity through a pipe passing through the focus of a compound parabolic collector into a lagged lower tank where it is stored for use. Series of performance tests were carried out on the system under high intensity solar insolation using the prevailing climatic condition in Owerri, Imo state Nigeria. Results obtained show that the thermo syphon system can produce domestic heating water of temperature of about 90 0 C. The temperature profiles plotted indicate that the system designed is strongly dependent on the prevailing weather condition.

Experimental Analysis of Solar Water Heating System using Phase Change Material

Energy one of the basic need of human being for existence. It plays important role in development and progress. The main source of energy is fossil fuels but sources are depleting now days. So we are forced to move on to another renewable energy sources like sun, wind, tidal etc. India is also investing heavy amount of money into non-renewable energy sources. Considering about the solar energy it can be utilise in two ways either converting it into electrical energy using solar cell or use as a thermal energy. The second method is being use form ancient time for house hold purpose like drying food, cloths etc. in U.S. the use of solar water heater is dated back to 1900. Solar energy apparatus which we use need a efficient and proper thermal storage unit. Therefore, it largely depends on the method and apparatus which we will use to store thermal energy. The property of latent (PCM) should be such that it can store large amount of latent heat while changing its phase and also release the heat during night time. It is obvious that any energy storage systems incorporating PCM will comprise significantly smaller volume when compared to other materials storing only sensible heat. A further advantage of latent heat storage is that heat storage and delivery normally occur over a fairly narrow temperature range the phase change temperature. Solar water heater is one of the most popular methods to utilise the solar energy. Solar water heater accounts for 80% of the solar thermal market. But the limitation of solar thermal energy is that we can only use it in day time. So to overcome this limitation we can use the solar heating setup with additional setup of PCM (Phase Change material). The property of PCM is that is changes its phase during heat addition and store the heat in the form of latent heat and when temperature decreases it again changes the phase and release the heat energy. In this research we will analyse that this method is how much efficient. The following paper deals with the experimental investigation of effectiveness of a parabolic collector and its results have been verified experimentally.

Development of a Solar Milk Pasteurizer for Improved Performance

QUEST JOURNALS

The consumption of un-pasteurized dairy products has been found to be a channel for the transmission of zoonotic diseases to man. In an attempt to solve this problem and ease the energy needs of the people, conventional fossil fuel for heating purposes has been studied. A solar milk pasteurizer system which traps and made use of the abundant solar energy to provide domestic pasteurized milk was developed and tested. The system consists of a flat plate solar collector of a total area of 4.3 m 2 with helical copper tubes capable of circulating 20 litres of water wound round a 20 litres milk vat. The system pasteurised 14 litres of milk whose temperature rose to 63 o C with a retention period of 30 minutes conveniently by exchanging heat with water at a temperature of 90 o C. Microbiological analysis performed on the pasteurized 14 litres of milk showed that the milk was negative to total Coli-form count, total faecal count and Staphylococcus. The total bacteria count and Fungi recorded from the pasteurized 14 litres recorded was 4cfu/ml each, which was below the US standard of 100cfu/ml.

 Experimental Analysis of Cylindrical Parabolic Collector with and without Tracking System

Praveen Math

The present study of this project work presents experimental platform based on the design, development and performance characteristics of water heating by tracking and non-tracking solar cylindrical parabolic concentrating system. The performance of the concentrator is experimentally investigated with the water circulated as heat transfer fluid. The tests will be carried out with both tracking and non-tracking mechanisms of cylindrical parabolic collector. The collector's efficiency will be noted. The collector's efficiency for both tracking and non-tracking system is compared. It was observed that for non-tracking system efficiency was 11.58%, for tracking it observed 18.8%. Obviously efficiency for tracking system was more and percentage of increase in efficiency was approximately 35%.
