P ROFESSIONAL O PPORTUNITIESLOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGEFY25 - Interim Director of Nursing 1.0 FTE D Basis Founded in 1929, Los Angeles City College (LACC) is the oldest of the nine colleges that make up the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), the largest community college district in the world. The campus is in the heart of Los Angeles, minutes from Hollywood and Downtown and conveniently adjacent to major freeway arteries and public transportation including the MTA and Metro. LACC is culturally rich with one of the most ethnically, ideologically and age diverse student bodies in the country. It is this diversity that drives LACC's long tradition of innovation and responsiveness to the changing needs of the times and its more than 17,000 students. Our programs range from serving the traditional transfer students to career training, adult career advancement, cultural integration and personal enrichment. Courses are offered during the day, evening, on weekends, via online and through other specialized tracks.

DEPARTMENTLACC offers an Associate in Science Degree Nursing (ADN) Program. The mission of the program is to educate students for entry level registered nursing positions in a variety of multicultural health care settings within the community. Program curriculum is based upon the National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN), Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), and the Nursing Process and is structured according to simple-to-complex knowledge attainment.

Students are provided with clinical experience concurrently with classroom and laboratory instruction. The program is affiliated with local hospitals and other health agencies where students administer direct nursing care to patients under the supervision of nursing faculty.

POSITIONThe LACC Department of Nursing is seeking an innovative and inspirational leader to lead the nursing program in a full-time, D-Basis 12-month limited position. This is a 1.0 FTE position for a possible duration of three (3) academic years. This position will start in the summer of 2024 to guide and oversee the Associate Degree Nursing Program, which prepares nursing students with exceptional skills and compassionate care to prepare for licensure as a Registered Nurse. This position reports directly to the Dean of Nursing, Allied Health, and Family Studies. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the innovation, administration, health and growth of the Registered Nursing Program. The administrative responsibilities include student advocacy, selection, orientation, evaluation and discipline, coordination of program curriculum, class schedules and clinical rotations, faculty hiring, mentoring, training and evaluation, and inspirational and exemplary representation of the nursing program in the community with pre-nursing students, with clinical agencies, and collegial cooperation within the division of Allied Health and Family Studies, the LACC campus, District, Los Angeles healthcare and educational community, and at statewide levels. Working with the Supervising Dean, the Director of Nursing has functional day-to-day work direction and supervision of Nursing classified staff and the daily operation of the Nursing Department. The Director of Nursing is responsible for meeting requirements to maintain Board of Registered Nursing program approval status and overseeing the future application for national accreditation (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing).

Duties And ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Dean of Nursing, Allied Health and Family Studies, the Director of Nursing manages the District's Associate Degree Nursing Program; develops and administers innovative Extended Nursing Programs and develops student enrollment growth Partnership Programs with both Dual Enrollment and BSN-degree programs, and develops preceptorship and placement programs to facilitate active engagement and student success, retention, and progress of nursing students through a curriculum that meets the standards of the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), the Education Code of the State of California and provisions of the Nursing Practice Act.

DutiesIn accordance with its mission as a community college, the Director of Nursing at LACC is expected to develop a collegial team of educators that collaborate to facilitate student learning by designing engaging and inclusive learning environments, using creative instructional design methods and varied learning modalities appropriate for in-person, hybrid, hyflex, and/or online instruction in theory, laboratory, and clinical courses. Evening and/or weekend duties may be scheduled based on department needs. In addition to the regular duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop student leadership in program development and evaluation, in student activities, and participate in student celebrations, commencement, convocation, the Nursing pinning ceremony, and other college-wide activities.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities, oversee the recruitment of students. Coordinate and supervise the admission of students into the program. Assume the responsibility for advanced placement of nursing students into appropriate classes. Supervise the submission of applications for students taking the state licensing exam (NCLEX-RN).
  • Provide a curriculum that meets the requirements mandated by the BRN; prepare reports needed for continued approval by the BRN. Report changes in faculty positions. Serve as a resource for innovative curriculum development and program evaluation.
  • Prepare organized processes for students in orientation to the program and preparation for graduation, preparation for application for NCLEX examination, nursing licensure steps, and transfer programs for concurrent or sequential BSN enrollment, preparation for interview processes with employers, and successful transition to employment in the healthcare field.
  • Facilitate communication between the nursing program, the division office, and other areas on campus. Interpret and implement the administrative policies, rules, regulations, and recommendations of the college. Maintain secure files for faculty, students, curriculum, and continuing education courses.
  • Assist in resolving staff, faculty, and/or student challenges and roadblocks in the nursing program. Provide guidance, feedback, and consistent follow-up to resolve problems and build a cohesive department and academic program.
  • Conduct regular program review and assessment of student learning objectives and program learning objectives. Serve as lead-researcher and writer for accreditation reports for internal and external accreditation agencies of the State of California's Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) or other agencies associated with non-credit offerings such as a Certified Nursing Assistant program (CNA).
  • Recommend persons for faculty and/or staff replacement. Recruit and maintain an active part- time and substitute-instructor list. Orient, guide, assign, and assist with evaluating all nursing department staff. Participate in tenure committees processes and documentation, and all requisite reports or portfolios. Maintain regular, ethical, and interactive methods of student evaluation of courses and instructors while maintaining confidentiality of student responses, and action plans for improvement as needed. Actively engage in continuous quality improvement of all aspects of the program offerings and operations. Asist dean in identification of revised or new classified support staff positions to best support student and program growth and success, assist in hiring and in the evaluation process of ancillary staff as guided by local Guild agreements.
  • Plan and schedule nursing department classes. Plan, review and revise schedule of classes for nursing in cooperation with the division Dean. Compute faculty load and plan teaching assignments in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement. Review and revise college catalog pertaining to nursing program each year.
  • Coordinate and administer nursing department budget. Allocate resources of nursing budget to provide for optimum functioning of the nursing department. Provide requests for supplies, equipment, maintenance, and improvement of facilities in cooperation with the faculty and division Dean. Provide diverse and equitable opportunities for in-services on pertinent instructional topics such as authentic assessment, managing implicit bias, developing ethical and caring practitioners, and provide opportunities for faculty conference attendance.
  • Strategically collaborate with the division dean to procure and utilize grants to develop department equipment, provide innovative instructional assets, and strengthen program resources. Implement and coordinate the provision of any grants, and application for Strong Workforce funds. Gather and share statistical data regarding nursing from LACC institutional research office and from regional community, governmental, and non-governmental sources.
  • Review proposed legislation affecting the healthcare professions and implement changes in laws and regulations. Communicate changes in State and Federal legislation affecting nursing to the appropriate campus persons.
  • Represent the college as required by the division dean, vice president of academic affairs or the college president. Articulate the nursing program with higher education institutions, the district high schools, health care agencies and other community organizations.
  • Maintain an advisory committee for the nursing program and serve as the chairperson.
  • Maintain scheduled on-campus presence and office hours and availability to students, staff, faculty, and dean support as needed and as defined by Guild agreement.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.
  • Maintain professional development in instructional design, classroom management and teaching standards, and technological learning tools and modalities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION as per Section 1425 of Faculty-Qualifications and Changes, Cal. Code Regs. title. 16

  • Must hold a clear and active license issued by the Board OF Registered Nursing
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university that includes coursework in nursing education or administration.
  • One (1) year's experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities consistent with section 1420(h);
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience in pre- or post-licensure nursing programs.
  • One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse; or Section 1425(a)(5) Equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the board.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.

HEALTHA medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment.

  • Knowledge of Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards.
  • Experience in leadership and teaching in a community college setting.
  • Plan, organize and administer the processes and operations of the District's Nursing Program, Extended Nursing, and Partnership Programs.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Understand and practice the principles of administration and supervision.
  • Effectively assess and evaluate programs and personnel.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with others.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Possess an excellent academic record and have experience teaching in one or more areas of nursing at the community college level.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to student success.
  • Experience in utilizing advanced nursing instructional technology such as hi-fidelity simulation in the clinical skills laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrate the understanding of, or have experience in, the use of student learning outcomes (SLO's) in promoting student success.
  • Possess a commitment to collegiality within the instructional environment by interacting effectively with colleagues and maintaining active participation in departmental meetings and committees.
  • Valid California driver's license

Salary BenefitsThe current starting range is from $87,388 0 $162,744 for the D-Basis 12-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $5,532 per academic year.   • Verification of either direct patient care experience as a registered nurse in the content/clinical area, within the previous five (5) years; or proof of current approval.
