The capital market as a source of financing for small innovative companies in the medical industry

The objective of the paper is to present the possibilities of financing the development of companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and medical sectors through the capital market. The trading prices of selected companies on the Polish stock exchanges (NewConnect and WSE) are discussed. Furthermore, the work analyzes the evolution of the WSE in the years 2007–2015 with a particular focus on the trading volumes and the maximum and minimum prices of the stocks of selected biotechnological and medical companies between January 2015 and April 2016. Using DbNotowania software from Statica, the selected companies were analyzed visually to identify abnormal price changes. Data were obtained from the at-skaner.pl database, normalized, and imported to Microsoft Access for more detailed analysis. It was concluded that the WSE may play a more prominent role in the development of innovative biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and medical companies if the changes recommended in this paper are implemented. Given the tendency towards capital market consolidation, it is logical that following an IPO on less liquid markets, companies will gradually try to transition to the more liquid ones. It would be advisable for small innovative companies to attract the attention of recommendation issuing companies such as Edison Investment Research. The government should encourage individual and institutional investors to participate and finance the Polish capital market by appropriate regulations and tax exemptions.

This paper focuses on the cluster concept development in Poland. It depicts policy based on clusters in the country. Furthermore, this research deepens the knowledge about the current stage of cluster development in Poland. On the basis of a sample group of Polish clusters, their characteristics are scrutinized and the good practices and solutions introduced in clusters are distinguished. Additionally, attention is being paid to problems encountered in cluster development under Polish conditions. Keywords— cluster, cluster policy, development, Poland.

Increasing regional and local policy, aimed at boosting the competitiveness of regions and provinces, is now becoming a common practice in the globalized economy. Therefore, in this article an important segment of the market is analyzed, which is regarded not only as a tool for enhancing the competitiveness of individual companies, but also od entire economies, namely - industrial clusters. The aim of the studies included in the paper was to identify the scope of usage of the Lean Management concept among cluster enterprises. At the same time within the study it was identified whether between businesses, practicing the above-mentioned concept, there is any information exchange - diffusion of knowledge.

The book is a summary of the work of the team involved in the Strengthening business performance management in economic networks project implemented within the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation programme. It describes the transfer of innovative methods for managing business networks in the UK to two countries of Central and Eastern Europe – Lithuania and Poland. In both these countries similar problems can be encountered. Clusters and business networks are a relatively new phenomenon in their economic reality and they often face competence barriers on the part of managers and facilitators. The publication discusses the main problems faced by network managers and facilitators, as well as more general rules and principles resulting from the cluster policy at the regional, national and European levels.
