Viterbi Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony

Any Viterbi students who graduated in Fall 2023, Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 are invited to participate.

    To provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite guest entry into the venue, the Galen Center will be implementing a “clear bag policy” that limits the size and type of bags that may be brought into the arena (one clear bag no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” per person) The policy does not affect other items that guests normally bring, which can still be carried in their pockets or openly in their arms.

    For increased security, all guests entering the Galen Center will walk through metal detector screening with arms raised and should remove all metal items from their pockets.

Grad Packs

  • Grad Packs are a convenient one stop shop of the most popular graduation items. Most Graduation Packages include USC Custom Gown/Hood Rental with Souvenir Cap & USC Tassel, Announcement Essentials plus a 2024 Keychain Tassel and a Diploma frame.   • Special instructions for master’s degree and doctoral students: please be very clear when you inform the staff what degree you are earning, to make sure you get the right color trim on your hood. Please see below and review thecolor key for regaliafor additional details.

Rented regalia should be returned to the drop-off area outside the Bookstore immediately following the Viterbi Undergraduate Ceremony. Returns after commencement day should be made inside the Bookstore’s first floor.

Stoles, or sashes, are optional purchases and can be ordered with the USC logo or embroidered university seal, and can be customized with fraternity/sorority crests, graduation year, or other commemorative marks. Stoles can be purchased at theUSC Bookstore or online.

To be eligible to wear honor cords on commencement day, you must be graduating by spring 2024, and have a minimum of a 3.5 University GPA at the beginning of spring semester 2024. All students who meet these qualifications will receive an email in April with instructions for picking up honor cords.

TheUSC Registrar’s Officeoversees the distribution of university diplomas, in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). To learn more about how your diploma will be distributed to you, please visitDiploma – Office of Academic Records and Registrar.

The 2024 Commencement Program includes students who graduated in Fall2023or will graduate in Spring or Summer 2024. Please check to confirm how your name will appear in theCommencement Program Book. All correction requests must be received by Degree Progress no later than 5pm on Monday, March 18th in order to make the printed copy of the 2024 Commencement Program. Commencement Programs Books will be available online and on campus May 10, 2024.

Please visit the Spring 2024 Commencement Program website to check if your name is on the list. Only students completing their degree requirements fall 2023, spring 2024, or summer 2024 will be included.

The El Rodeo – USC’s yearbook is one of the oldest student organizations on campus, publishing since 1899. Through the El Rodeo website, students can order a copy of the year, purchase a dedication, or learn about how to get their portraits taken. Please visitEl Rodeo.

Typically, your @usc.edu student account will be disabled six (6) months after your conferred degree date. If you are still using your @usc.edu email account, please note that USC will require you to have DUO 2-factor authentication activated by January 20, 2022.   • While the focal point of Commencement 2024 is the main ceremony on Friday morning, many activities are earlier in the week. Chief among these is the Baccalaureate Ceremony on Thursday, May 9.
  • Baccalaureate is a non-denominational, interfaith celebration open to all students and guests. No reservations are required for the ceremony, but seating is available on a first-come/first-served basis. Students are not required to wear regalia for the ceremony.

General Admission

ADA Accommodation(s)/Effective Communication

  • When graduates register their guests, they should note if any guest(s) require a Sign Language Interpreter for the ceremony or need accommodations for limited mobility, impaired hearing and more. Due to the venue’s space limitations, onlyoneguest may accompany the guest in the ADA effective communication seating area.

Wheelchair Access

  • When graduates register their guests, they should note if any guest(s) require wheelchair seating for the duration of the ceremony. Due to the venue’s space limitations, onlyoneguest may accompany the guest in the wheelchair seating area. Upon arrival at the wheelchair seating area, please check-in with staff with your ticket ready.
  • *Please note, there is a limited number of wheelchair accessible seats in the Galen Center. We will do all that we can to accommodate all guest needs.

Please check in all strollers at the stroller check-in inside the Galen Center main lobby. Due to venue policy, strollers are NOT allowed in the venue seating area. Please plan to bring anything you need for a baby/young child to sit in your seats.

Once the procession begins, standing in aisles inside the main auditorium is prohibited due to fire codes, and will be monitored by a fire marshal. A photographer will take pictures of graduates as they proceed to the stage and while on stage. We ask that all guests remain seated during the ceremony. Guests may not congregate in the aisles or open spaces due to fire codes. Large video screens are available and will make it easier for families and friends to see graduates as they process to the stage.

Campus will have heavy traffic congestion, therefore public transportation is highly recommended. Complimentary parking is available at all USC Parking Structures on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pleaseclick here to review transit and parking options for commencement day.

Parking is extremely limited on campus, and due to the large crowds, parking usually fills up by 7:00 a.m. USC Transportation will direct you to the next gate or to the off-campus facilities if the structures are full. The Grand Avenue Parking Structure (formerly UPX), on the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Grand Avenue, is recommended for all degree candidates, their families and guests.

For your preferred rideshare options, designated pick-up and drop-off zones will be coordinated to ease the flow of traffic and will be accessible across the University Park campus.

Most major departments hold receptions on Commencement day. In many cases, these receptions start before the Undergraduate Ceremony ends because the receptions are for both undergraduate and graduate students. Please have your graduate contact their department if they have not received an invitation via email.

The 2024 Commencement Program will include the names of graduates with degree dates of fall 2023, spring 2024 and summer 2024.

The photography company Grad Images to take photos during the Viterbi Commencement Ceremony. The photographer will be taking a posed photograph and a photograph for each graduate when they receive their diploma. Grad Images will reach out to the graduates via email to order photos after the ceremony.

Step 2: Register to participate in your Viterbi Commencement ceremony via Marching Order

  • Submit your registration to participate in your respective graduation ceremony
    • Marching Order is the online student Commencement registration platform.
    • Graduates will receive an official email from Marching Order with instructions on registering to participate in your graduation ceremony starting on January 31, 2024

During registration, all graduates will be required to note any individuals with disabilities who need accommodations. Every reasonable effort will be made to provide reasonable accommodations in an effective and timely manner. Due to space limitations, only one guest may accompany a guest in the ADA accommodation seating area.

Out of Cycle Students

Out-of-Cycle students are those who did not graduate in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or Summer 2024. To participate in the May 2024 Commencement Ceremonies, they need to complete an Out of Cycle form. Additionally, there are specific forms for UG and MS Out-of-Cycle Commencement Requests for 2024.

Out-of-Cycle students can complete the UG Out-of-Cycle Commencement Request Form 2024. Once submitted, the Viterbi Admission and Student Engagement Office (VASE) will review and provide further instructions.

Students must submit an out-of-cycle form to participate in the Viterbi Ceremonies.

Once the out-of-cycle is approved, the graduate will receive an email from our registration platform, Marching Order, to register for Commencement.

Students finishing in December 2023 can participate in the university-wide ceremony in May 2024, but their name will not appear in the 2024 program.

Visa Letters

USC does not provide invitation letters, but you may use a template provided by the Office off International Students.

Students must submit an out-of-cycle form to participate in the Viterbi Ceremonies.

Once the out of cycle is approved, the graduate will receive an email from our registration platform, Marching Order, to register for Commencement.

Commencement registration opens on January 31st. Once registration opens the graduate can use the confirmation email for his documentation that he is participating in Commencement.

We do not generate letters of confirmation for visa purposes.
